Job updates for electricians The best work you do gets plastered over. Show it first.
A rewire is days of chasing walls and pulling cable, and by the time the customer is home the plaster is back and all they can see is new faceplates. Photos posted as you go — the old fuse box, the cable runs before the boards go down, the new board labelled up — show them exactly what they paid for, while it can still be seen.

What your customer reads on their link as the work goes on, oldest first. Each line is a photo or a sentence posted from your phone.
Day 1, 8am
Power off from 9. Lifting the landing boards first.
Day 1, 4pm
The old cable is crumbling where it goes into the backs of the sockets. Photos of the worst of it.
Day 2, 3pm
First fix done upstairs. Cables clipped before the boards go back.
Day 3, 1pm
Plasterer is in tomorrow. We’re back Thursday for second fix.
Day 5, 5pm
New consumer unit in and every circuit labelled. Testing tomorrow morning.
What’s worth photographing on an electrical job?
Anything that will be hidden or hard to explain later. The old board before it comes off the wall, the cable runs in the joists before the floor goes down, the back boxes before the plasterer arrives. A customer who has watched the first fix happen doesn’t ask why the second fix took a day.
Can I explain a problem I found in the old wiring?
Post a photo of it with a line about what it is: the scorched connection, the missing earth, the junction box buried in plaster. Your customer sees the reason for a change of plan before you ring to talk about it, and the photo stays on their job page afterwards.
Does it replace my certificates?
No. How’s the Job is for keeping the customer in the picture while the work happens; your test certificates and paperwork go to them the way they always have. What it adds is the part the paperwork never shows — what the job looked like on the way through.
Can I show the customer what I found on an inspection?
You can post photos of what you found with a line about each: the cracked socket, the overheated connection, the bare cable in the loft. They sit on the customer’s job page, so they can look again later or show whoever is paying. It doesn’t write or store your report — that still goes to them the way it always has.
How do I warn the customer the power will be off?
Post it as an update before the day: when the supply goes off, roughly how long for, and what to do about the freezer or anyone working from home. It sits at the top of their job page, so the whole household can check it rather than relying on whoever you spoke to at the door.
What does it cost?
Nothing. How’s the Job is free to use for electricians, with no card needed to sign up, and always free for your customer, who opens the link in their phone’s browser with no app and no account. It does one thing — show your customer how the job is going — so it sits alongside whatever you use for quotes and invoices. How it compares.
