Job updates for heating engineers No heating, no hot water, and a customer counting the hours.
A boiler swap leaves a house without heat or hot water, and a customer at work wondering whether it’ll be back by tonight. A heat pump install is days of pipework, a unit outside and a new cylinder in the airing cupboard. Send one link when you start and post as you go: the old boiler off the wall, what came out in the flush, the new controls. They stop texting because they can see where it’s got to.
Free to use. Nothing for your customer to install.

What your customer reads on their link as the work goes on, oldest first. Each line is a photo or a sentence posted from your phone.
Day 1, 8am
Water and gas off from now. No heating or hot water until late afternoon.
Day 1, 10am
Old boiler off the wall. The flue is moving — photo of where the new one comes out.
Day 1, 12pm
Flushing the system. Photo of what came out of the old radiators.
Day 1, 4pm
New combi on and fired up. Hot water’s back — radiators warming now.
Does it replace my Gas Safe paperwork?
No. Your certificates, notifications and manufacturer’s paperwork go to the customer the way they always have; How’s the Job doesn’t produce or hold any of them. It is for keeping the customer in the picture while the work happens — what came off the wall, what went on, and when the heating is back.
What’s worth photographing on a boiler or heat pump job?
The old boiler and its pipework before it comes off, the sludge from the flush, the new filter on the return, the flue where it leaves the wall, the outdoor unit and where its pipes run, the cylinder in place. Each one answers a question the customer would otherwise ask when they get home.
How does it help on a no-heating call-out?
A customer without heat wants to know one thing: when it’s back. Tap “On my way”, post a photo of the failed part with a line about what it is, and if it needs ordering, use “Part ordered, back…” and add the day. They can plan around a cold night instead of waiting by the phone.
Does it work for heat pump installs that run over several days?
Yes. The link stays the same for the whole job, so every day’s photos and notes collect on one page in order. The customer sees the outdoor unit go in, the pipework, the cylinder and any radiators you change, and knows which days they will be without heating or hot water before they come round.
Can I leave notes on the new controls?
Post a photo of the thermostat or programmer with a line on how you’ve set it and what to change. It stays on the customer’s job page after the job is complete, so it is there in January when they can’t remember what you said at the door in October.
What does it cost?
Nothing. How’s the Job is free to use for heating engineers, with no card needed to sign up, and always free for your customer, who opens the link in their phone’s browser with no app and no account. It does one thing — show your customer how the job is going — so it sits alongside whatever you use for quotes and invoices. How it compares.
